Early-stage technological decisions determine how far a product can go. A tech stack that is sufficient for the first prototype often becomes a barrier to growth as the user base or range of features expands. It is difficult for founders to assess which technological foundation is appropriate today and which will support future scaling without introducing unnecessary complexity. FOSTEC Ventures brings the investor’s perspective to bear here: technology is judged by whether it supports the business model.

Context & relevance

Technical debt arises early on and becomes more costly with every step of growth. An architecture that is not designed for scaling, or a reliance on individual developers or service providers, can weigh on the company’s value just as much as a weak business model. When considering an investment, it is therefore crucial to assess whether the technology is robust, scalable and independent enough to withstand growth and subsequent funding rounds. This assessment is not merely a technical issue, but an economic one: it determines the pace of product development and the capital intensity of each subsequent stage.

Our approach

Our contribution combines our core asset – expertise – with the technological and implementation expertise drawn from the FOSTEC & Company network. We assess technology from an investor’s perspective and support key strategic decisions, without taking over product responsibility from the founding team. Three areas form the core.

Tech stack & architecture

The starting point is the question of whether the chosen technology is suited to the current stage of development and the targeted growth. We assess the tech stack and architecture in terms of scalability, maintainability and dependencies, and identify areas where early decisions could limit future growth. The key factor is appropriateness: not the technically optimal solution, but the foundation best suited to the current stage of development. Where adjustments are warranted, we prioritise them according to impact and effort. This provides founders with a well-founded assessment of the technology’s viability. For the investor, it becomes clear whether the architecture can support growth or needs to be refined before scaling up.

MVP & product development

The journey from an idea to a market-ready product determines how quickly and cost-effectively a business model reaches market maturity. We support the definition of a viable Minimum Viable Product (MVP) that tests key assumptions with real users before investing in the full range of features. The focus is on prioritisation: which features are crucial for validating the model, and which can be deferred to later phases? This approach shortens the time to obtaining reliable market feedback and avoids tying up capital in features that the market does not value. For the investor, this creates a product roadmap that closely integrates development and market validation.

Technical due diligence & partner selection

Before investing and before making key technology decisions, we assess the technical substance of the company. This assessment covers code quality, architecture, security and reliance on individual persons or service providers, with the aim of identifying technical risks at an early stage. When it comes to selecting technology partners or service providers, we support the founding team in identifying the right partner based on suitability and terms, rather than entering into avoidable dependencies. This provides founders with an independent assessment of the technical situation and partner options. For the investment, technical viability serves as a robust basis for the investment decision.
